Nicole's Film Perspectives

An Entertainment Rundown and Box Office Analysis

Nicole’s Film Perspectives is a podcast hosted by Joselyn Nicole. Every week, we go into depth on box office analysis, film reviews and our awards season predications. Never a slow moment for the world of film.

“Supergirl” arrives this Friday to cinemas! It’s the sophomore entry to last year’s “Superman” directed by Craig Gillespie. It stars Milly Alcock, David Corenswet, Jason Momoa, Eve Ridley and Matthias Schoenaerts.

My podcast review is linked below for the film where I go into depth on both a non-spoiler and spoiler review. I really focus on Milly Alcock’s performance of Kara Zor-El where she is the film’s strength. As I said in my first reaction of the film – she’s a knockout. Alcock delivers a balanced performance of Kara’s struggles, melaconcy and essence of goodness. Is she as punk rock as her cousin Clark (AKA Superman/David Corenswet)? She’s cuts through the noise and is willing to take on the burden of others.

Kara’s relationship with Clark is dynamic int he film and as the trailers have shown we have sprinkles of Clark/Superman throughout the film. Without going into spoilers you’ll be pleased with their chemistry as cousins and the anchor their relationship will have going forward. However, the Kara’s strongest link to the film is her relationship with Krypto where we see her tethered to. There’s been on constant in her life since the destruction of her planet and that’s been her home – wherever Krypto is.

Also I want to highlight two performances: David Krumholtz and Eve Ridley. Krumholtz plays Kara’s father, Zor-El and he delivers a heartbreaking performance during the small glimpses we’re allotted of him. I do wish we had more of an opportunity to expand the flashback scenes for Kara’s time on Krypton because we’re short changed of some of the best scenes of the film. Additionally, Eve Ridley plays Ruthye Marye Knoll who faces a grave tragedy during the story and serves as the opposite side of the coin for Alcock’s Kara. She’s witty, scrappy and wants to grow up too fast in a world that will happily see her crumble.

Lastly, I do wish this film was longer because its runtime of 108 minutes is too packed. We needed time to expand Kara’s time on Krypton, develop Ruthye and Kara’s relationship and incorporate Jason Momoa’s Lobo more organically throughout the film.

Please tune into my podcast review and we’ll talk spoilers on Friday!
