“One Night Only” Review
I’ve had this film on my radar because of the brilliant Monica Barbaro. She’s a star. I’ve been rooting for her since her Academy Award nomination and was in the minority of her getting nominated since the beginning. She’s got a voice that carries a film and “One Night Only” uses that skill well and playfully. Barbaro carries the film as Allison/Allie and she is magnetic in a 12-hour purge like setting where premarital sex was outlawed except one day a year.
Enter Callum Turner who play Owen and has his own hurdles to go through on the wildest and thirstiest night of the year. He hits a rocky road with his girlfriend played by Maya Hawke and chaos ensues when the fever of the wild night hits. However, I don’t want to give too much away because the film is a cameo festival for New York actors alike. It’s playful, light hearted, silly, but hits on the notes of a hopeless tale that in a typical romance comedy will get its happy ending. However, it’s the buildup and the afterglow that make the journey worth wild.
