Post Mortem! We’re switching up because “Moana” landed exactly where I predicted. Granted, I was hoping to be wrong but I was straight on target. My estimated range was $43 to $49 million and it came at $43.1 million. To think this film was originally predicted to open at a $80 million range and it sunk by almost half.
Another film that severely underwhelmed was “Evil Dead Burn” which had industry projections of $30 to $40 million and I had it at $27 to $35 million, but it came at $13.7 million. To think we had such great surges between “Michael” and “The Devil Wears Prada 2” back in April and May, but now we’re underdelivering at box office. Is the fever building for “The Odyssey” and “Spider-Man” Brand New Day” that the audience is waiting to use their box office dollars until then?
Now one of my favourite films of the season went into wide release and had a great increase – “The Invite”. It scored a $5.9 million weekend and continues to have a great wave of buzz as we journey into awards season. I do believe its strongest shots are going to be in screenplay and potentially editing for the film.
Next, we have “Minions & Monsters” second weekend where it lined up exactly where I predicted. It had a $21.5 million weekend and I had estimated $17 to $22 million so we’re right on target. I do feel bad this film didn’t have a strong debut, but its hold into its second weekend was solid. However, this entry of “‘Minions’ is looking to undeliverable for the franchise overall.
