Well the summer has kicked off and we’re going into the second weekend with “Mortal Kombat” looking to continue on the streak of solid box office. Will it be as high as “The Devil Wears Prada 2”?
Now “Mortal Kombat 2” was supposed to release last October and its numbers predicted were forecasted in the $60 million range domestic opening. However, it’s move to May has now lead to it being a wild card. Currently, “Variety” has listed its tracking between $40 to 45 million, which is a step back from where it was forecasted. I do think it’ll outperform the original “Mortal Kombat” opening of $23.3 million, but can it at least double it?
Now the ultimate goal would be a $50-60 million debut, but it feels unpredictable. Where do I land with it? I think there’s a world where we can see it in the low 40’s, but I do see it coming it slightly under 60. It’s the ole tale of being torn in two camps. I haven’t had the opportunity to see the film since I had the “Daredevil: Born Again” Season Two finale the same night as the press screening. However, a fellow critic I know who did see it said that it feels a little too insider baseball. Will fans be pleased? Yes. But can that bring in repeatability factor for the general audience? What I was also told was the humour leans more camp and doesn’t land the majority of the time. Now it has me hesitant, but I’m hoping for a better outcome to continue this summer box office that’s been performing nicely so far.
Now for “The Sheep Detectives” which I will be seeing tomorrow – I’m extremely curious how this film is going to do. I think for a film that leans into two strong categories: family fare and whodunit genre blend that can interest audiences in addition to stack cast of High Jackman, Emma Thompson, Byran Cranston, Nicholas Galitzine and that’s scratching the surface. The Rotten Tomatoes scores still remains high at 96% with the critics and I think this blend could possibly end up producing a double digital debut for this film at $12-18 million for the domestic market.
Lastly, we have “Billie Eilish – Hit Me Hard and Soft: The Tour (Live in 3D) which is predicted to be in the higher single digits according to Deadline. Now for a James Cameron direct film that only cost $20 million to produce it’ll most likely breakeven with a slight profit. The press screening is tonight for this and I won’t be able to attend, but I think of how this could be an avenue where concerts and live performances can really get creative and bring a new audience with this type of filming. I do think Deadline’s predications are most on par with this film’s debut but I do hope for higher.
Lastly, I think the box office hold for “Michael” will yet again be strong in the box office. “The Devil Wears Prada 2” I do think will hold stronger internationally, but we have to see if the domestic box office was front loaded or not.
Tomorrow be on the lookout for my breakdown of “The Odyssey” trailer and more shop talk of news stories breaking.
