We’re about to be starting something – a new refresh on our box office predications. We’re here with “Michael” dancing into the arena and I think its opening is going to be higher than expected.
The original industry projection was $200 million but it has now lowered to $150 million after the critics score debut rotten on Rotten Tomatoes. I had the opportunity to see the film early and my review is up on the podcast, but as I keep repeating: “I’m of two camps. I really like the film, but I have major issues with the structure of the film.” Now I do believe that the opening numbers of this film will be high – I would be surprised if it’s below the $80 million debut domestically because the premium screens are selling well. Right now the margin is so big between $65 to $95 that’s flucuating so let’s see where it lands.
Next, we have “Super Mario Galaxy” Movie looking to cross into the $800 million worldwide total this weekend. Let’s see how high this film can go. Then on the opposite spectrum we have “Over Your Dead Body” looking to crack into the opening weekend market. I saw it last night and it’s a grotesque film, but it works. It won’t be an easy watch, but Samara Weaving shines through so brightly.
Now, “Project Hail Mary” did is still holding strong and it should be able to cross into the $600 million worldwide total soon which is Amazon MGM’s biggest film. I think this film is going to go far in the nominations count, but its the wins that I’m curious about at the end of the day.
Lastly, this is the calm before the storm before our summer blockbuster launch off of “The Devil Wears Prada 2” next week. Anne Hathaway is about to kick off the summer in a huge way with this and “The Odyssey” and I’m beyond excited. I’ll discuss my box office predications early next week, but seeing this film on Monday so get READY!
