Well we’re a little late on our analysis, but this will be a post-box office weekend post mortem. Let’s compare and see where these number land. I expected “Super Mario Galaxy” to take the number one spot and it did! It’ll be its last weekend at the number one spot, but it’s pacing comfortably to finish in the $900 million or scrap above $1 billion. It’s tracking behind the first film’s box office, but the discrepancy should have it squeeze above one billion.
“The Super Mario Galaxy” movie finished at $35 million this box office weekend which is a shy under my $36 million predication. It’s hold has been solid and should play well throughout the rest of the month until we get “Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu” hits theatres and “Toy Story 5” in the next two months. I wouldn’t count Mario and Luigi out of the top ten in the next few weeks because look at Pixar’s “Hoppers” still in the top ten after seven weeks in theatres.
Next, we have Lee Cronin’s “The Mummy” which also came a hair shy of my predication of $14 million, but opened with $13.5 million. It’s not a bad debut for a mixed reception film that didn’t connect with critics and audiences, but it shows that horror still has power in the box office. The budget of this film was reported at $22 million and its worldwide debut was $34 million this past weekend. In hindsight we’re looking at a breakeven and even profitable venture from Jason Blum yet again.
Now, “Project Hail Mary” did my favourite outcome – it surpassed my predication and its well deserved. It dominated the IMAX screens and I had an opportunity to see it again on 70MM IMAX and it continues to hold up fabously. PLEASE GO SEE IT! It’s box office in its fifth weekend is above $20 million and I’m extremely excited to see where this project will land in awards season, but its looking like Rocky and Grace are going for gold.
Lastly, “Mother Mary” was in limited release and I had confused its rollout. Because its gross total for this weekend was $168K on five screens which brings its average per screen to $33k estimate. It’s a respectable debut to a movie that I liked, but didn’t enjoy. The teases of Anne Hathaway as a pop star and she is a stand out in a film that ultimately gets messy. I will say I do recommend the companion album they released for this film because Anne has a beautiful voice that embodies some brilliant songs that I wish got their full due in the film and not just a tease.
Now I hope you liked my post mortem anaylsis in the box office. If you like it let me know and we can switch it up every once in a while?
Stay tune for my review for “Michael” tomorrow! Seeing it tonight!
