“The Rivals of Amziah King” Review

Alright, alright, alright… we’ve finally arrived with “The Rivals of Amziah King” gracing our screens and I do hope you watch it in theatres. It’s worth your attention, time and admiration. Why? You have Matthew McConaughey coming back to the big screen in an impactful way, but the introduction of Angelina Lookingglass is stunning.

Classified as a Neo-western crime thriller this film directed and written by Andrew Patterson shows much heart in the cheekiest of ways. It’s not your typical western in the sense of muting the humor, but enhancing some dark comedy laced throughout. It has the essence of HBO’s “True Detective”, but with McConaughey coming in with such warmth and open arms.

Angelina Lookingglass’ Kateri is Amaziah King’s (McConaughey) foster daughter who returns back to the fold in a small town of Oklahoma. She falls into the fold of Amaziah’s honey business and the hijinks that ensues, but you’ll be rooting for the southern charm that this story draws you in with.

I don’t want to spoil anything and I do go into depth in my review about my thoughts on the podcast review linked below, but I do warn that the first hour of this film is one of the strongest narratives I’ve seen unfolded in such a long time. McConaughey and Lookingglass are absolutely dynamite together on the screen and you’ll be leaving the theatre a little fuller and lighter on soul.
