Lucky 13 as the old saying goes and we’ll see if we’re going to soar far. I will say I’m quite pleased with “Project Hail Mary” and it’s $80.6 million debut domestically and over $140 million worldwide. It’s a major win for Ryan Gosling and now he’s signed on for The Daniels’ upcoming project after their Oscars’ sweep for “Everything Everywhere All At Once”.
Now going into the second weekend for “Project Hail Mary” we’re looking at a forecast of a fantastic second weekend hold. I’m targeting it being in the mid-forties, but I won’t be surprised if we see it tip its hat into the lower 50’s range because the continous sold out shows for premium format for this film and the spectaular word of mouth that is roaring.
Additionally, we have two smaller releases this weekend from IFC Entertainment and Skydance Media/New Line. They consist of “Forbidden Fruits” and “They Will Kill You” from the respectively named studios. Although their numbers are not expected to land in the double digit terrain. You’ll hear my thoughts on “Forbidden Fruits” tomorrow on the podcast, but it had positive reception coming from SXSW and is currently holding fresh on Rotten Tomatoes. Ironically enough the Rotten Tomatoes score for “They Will Kill You” is only one point higher at 73 compared to “Forbidden Fruit” at 72.
Now “Project Hail Mary” is deemed to be the king of the weekend, but we also have to give a shoutout to “Hoppers”. It’s looking at a spectacular hold yet again and is looking to finish globally in the $280-$300 million global haul.
Lastly, we’re going to keep an eye out for “Super Mario Brothers Galaxy” movie because it’s out on Wednesday – April 1st! We’ll have an earlier box office discussion on Wednesday to see where thisfilm can open during it’s first long weekend.
Let’s see if my projections hit or do you have any further thoughts on where this box office can go?
Stay tune for the results and check out my predications!
