Lucky number seven! We’re into a holiday weekend, but we’re looking at the 3-day overhaul because the anticipation for “Wuthering Heights” and its performance will be closely analyzed. There’s three other new releases as well that will serve as a full menu for audiences having the opportunity to watch something in theatres.
Having seen both “Wuthering Heights” and “Crime 101” (reviews will be up later today and tomorrow!) ahead of the holiday weekend I can certainty say there’s repeat watchability in both films. Particularly, “Crime 101” starring Chris Hemsworth, Halle Berry, Mark Ruffalo, Barry Keoghan and Monica Barbaro where the film will be pleasant surprise for audiences. My predication is that this film will have stronger legs at the box office than “Wuthering Heights”.
However, “Wuthering Heights” is expected to perform strongly this Valentine’s Day weekend and I do believe this film will be extremely front loaded at the box office. The question remains who high can its box office opening weekend be? What will be its second weekend drop off?
The best comparison or goal for “Wuthering Heights” to aim for is to match or surpass the first “Fifty Shades of Grey” opening weekend back in 2015 was $85.17 million in the box office. I have it coming in the $60 million range for the weekend. However, the following two entries in the “Fifty Shades” saga came in at $46.6 million (“Fifty Shades Darker”) and $38.8 million (“Fifth Shades Freed”) respectively. We’ll see where “Wuthering Heights” can land this weekend, but if it can at least surprise industry expectations of $50 million than we’re scaling into a more positive conversation.
“Crime 101” on the other hand is expected to come on the higher end in the high teens, but I do believe the word of mouth and IMAX push could push it into the 20 million range. It’s beautifully shot and well performed. I can’t wait to dive more into it in my review, but I highly recommend you catching this film in theatres if you have the opportunity.
We also have a new animation film out this weekend being distributed by Sony titled “GOAT” that is expected to have a splash at the box office. Never doubt animation and it can be a tough fight for the number two spot this weekend between “GOAT” and “Crime 101”.
Let’s see if my projections hit or do you have any further thoughts on where this box office can go?
Stay tune for the results and my reviews up shortly!
